Readout of Ambassador Katherine Tai’s Meeting with Chicago Asian American Community Leaders

CHICAGO – Ambassador Katherine Tai today met with a group of local AANHPI leaders during her trip to Chicago. Meeting attendees included Ji Hye Kim, Executive Director of KAN-WIN; Neha Gill, Executive Director of Apna Ghar; Sima Qureshi, Executive Director of the Muslim Women’s Resource Center; Sung Yeon Choimorrow, Executive Director of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum; and Grace Chan, Executive Director of Coalition for Coalition For A Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC).

During the meeting, Ambassador Tai emphasized her focus on developing a trade policy that delivers economic growth and broad-based prosperity, particularly during a time of increased hate crimes against the AANHPI community. The group also discussed how the United States could use its trade agenda to combat human rights abuses and gender-based violence in certain regions and countries. Ambassador Tai stated this issue was a top priority for USTR and the Biden-Harris Administration and asked for the group’s feedback on how to develop concrete solutions addressing these abuses.

Ambassador Tai committed to maintaining an open line of communication with meeting attendees and working together to help lift up small and medium-sized businesses, particularly those owned by women and communities of color, and aspirational entrepreneurs.
